Dr. Odessa Gill is a Naturopathic Doctor in Toronto, Canada with 12 years of experience under her belt. We sat down with her to talk about being a doctor, her clinic and some easy tips to following a healthy lifestyle!
1) What made you want to get into Naturopathic Medicine?
I always knew that I was going to become a doctor. I went to McGill University for premedical studies and completed a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology and Immunology. After graduating I observed a home visit with a Naturopathic Doctor who did acupuncture for pain relief for a friend with cancer. I was impressed by the amount of time spent with my friend. After her hour long treatment, her pain had subsided and she felt better overall. Although, the real turning point came while I was working as a Protocol Writer for a pharmaceutical company in Toronto. During my time there, I realized I wanted to explore alternate options for healthcare besides pharmaceuticals. Naturopathic Medicine was the obvious choice. Its focus on prevention and nutrition was well aligned with my views on health. I made the decision to pursue Naturopathic Medicine and have never looked back. It was the right choice for me. Every day I love going to work and feel grateful to be a positive influence in many people's lives.
2) For people out there who are not familiar with Naturopathic Medicine can you tell us more about becoming a Naturopathic Doctor and the rigorous standards it takes to become one?
To enter the program, one must have completed their premedical sciences in University. Most applicants have completed their Bachelor of Science from a University program. During the 4 year program to become a Naturopathic Doctor, every student is required to pass State Board Examinations after second year and then again after 4th year. Depending on the province you are practicing in, there may be even more exams. To obtain my license, I remember writing about 15 exams in one week!
3) How long have you been a practising Naturopathic Doctor?
I have been in practice for over 12 years now.
4) Tell me about Aspire health and what services your clinic offer.
At Aspire Health Naturopathic Clinic, we have on staff two Naturopathic Doctors, one Registered Psychotherapist, two Registered Massage Therapists, a Holistic Nutritionist and a BioEnergetic Practitioner. I have a special focus on Fertility, Prenatal care and Women's Health. I use acupuncture, lab testing and nutrient assessments to address these concerns. Dr. Alexsia Priolo, ND has a focus on Women's and Children's health and assists with hormonal imbalances, skin concerns and weight management. Our clinic offers extensive blood testing. We do Food Sensitivity Testing, standard blood tests for cholesterol, blood sugar, thyroid and more. We also do Vitamin testing to check for optimal nutrient status. Our psychotherapist is excellent and also offers weekly drop-in Meditation Sessions every Wednesday from 12:30 to 1:30. Honestly, we offer so many great services that I often encourage anyone with questions to call Lindsey directly at the clinic or to book a complimentary 15 minute consult with any of our practitioners.
5) Can you tell me more about what sets Aspire Health apart from other clinics?
At Aspire, we are a family. Many of the practitioners have worked together for over 5 years and some have even worked together for more than 10 years. As a result, there is great collaboration amongst the healthcare team. We all have our strengths and when a patient can benefit from another service, all of this can be done in-house. This allows for greater care for the patient. Because of this, we often see entire families who recognize the benefits of integrated healthcare.
6) How does including herbal supplements like the Raw Chemist herbal blends help benefit peoples health?
Raw blends, like the Raw Chemist formulas are great because they can be easily added to smoothies or as a tea. As a result of increased pollution and increased stress, the nutrient demand for the body is also increased. These formulas are gentle and can assist with a variety of health concerns.
7) How does juicing fresh vegetables and fruit help promote a healthy lifestyle?
I love juicing! It is a convenient way for the body to get a lot of nutrients in an easy to digest form. I personally love juicing because it is great for being on the go. Many patients are often surprised when we start limiting their caffeine intake and incorporate juices and they find they have more energy. I am grateful the Raw Chemist is in my neighbourhood.
8) What recomendations can you make to living an overall healthy lifestyle?
How to live healthy? That is the great question. I like to make things simple. Make your health a priority. Have a second set of eyes on your yearly bloodwork and look for trends. A Naturopathic Doctor will review your health goals, bloodwork and listen to all your symptoms. Do your best to reduce stress levels and go to bed early. Find a healthcare team that will be there to motivate you to be your best self, mind, body and spirit.
